In three words, tell us: WHY DO YOU DO IT?

That’s how we sought to find the reasons why women who read Endurance Magazine run, bike, swim, or go to the gym.   You’ll find many of the answers printed on the cover of this issue and more inside next to the pictures of just a few of the interesting women who responded to our survey.

Coming from women as old as 14 and as young as 80, the responses were enlightening, humorous, inspirational and in some cases, no different from men’s reasons for engaging in the Endurance Lifestyle.  But while we weren’t too surprised to see the competitive spirit in women just like men, we were surprised to discover just how many women truly are the “Healthcare CEO” of their family.

We saw that the women who responded were, of course, exercising for their own benefit, but also as part of their own and their family’s regular daily activities – activities which were originally initiated by the women themselves and go far beyond the traditional idea of simply putting a healthy meal on the table.  In fact, women are smashing the mold of the wife and mother who makes more than 70% of her family’s healthcare decisions but neglects her own health.

Women today who are leading the Endurance Lifestyle are doing Yoga, working out with personal trainers, using kettlebells, running, cycling, and swimming to get and stay healthy.  They’re also training for 5K’s, adventure races, century bike rides, and tackling events like Endurance Magazine’s Ramblin’ Women Only Triathlons which have been selling out in cities like Chapel Hill, Charlotte and Winston-Salem for the past three years!

What’s great about women’s involvement in this lifestyle is that when they begin, they bring their whole family with them!  It’s no surprise that women-only events like the Ramblin’ Rose triathlons draw thousands of spectators in the husbands and children of the women who participate.

As the number of participants in events like Endurance Magazine’s Ramblin’ Rose Women Only Triathlons continues to grow year after year, we don’t expect the empowered women to stop there.  In addition to participating in activities like Yoga and Pilates, more and more women are taking up and demystifying traditional “men only” activities like CrossFit and Kettlebell training.
