Tucked away in the Blue Ridge foothills, at the base of Linville Gorge, and only 75 miles NW of Charlotte you’ll find spectacular Lake James, venue for the 2nd Annual MTA Sprint Triathlon. The McDowell Trails Association chose this extraordinary site to host their annual triathlon on the grounds of Lake James State Park. As described by Charlotte resident and triathlete, Matthew Rice, Lake James “is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Carolinas, with clear water that stays cool even in July and is fed by wild, mountain streams. Biking around the lake is fantastic with short rollers, fast curves and spectacular views.

Lake James borders the eastern side of McDowell County in North Carolina.  The Blue Ridge Parkway borders the northern boundary, Marion is the county seat and Old Fort borders the western quadrant. To the south, close to the South Mountains, McDowell merges into Rutherford County where you’ll find gold mines in the Vein Mountain region.  McDowell County has a very diverse community with elevations ranging from 1200 ft. above sea level to well above 3500 feet above sea level and includes the destination towns of Marion, Old Fort, Linville Falls, and Little Switzerland
