Shown here at a Rev3 Triathlon, professional triathlete Jordan Rapp set a course record in winning the 2009 Ford Ironman Arizona triathlon. Four months later, he was nearly killed in a horrifying accident that shattered his face, collarbone and shoulder. Eight months after his accident, Jordan capped an amazing comeback when he finished fourth at the same race he won a year prior.
On February 24th, local pro Alex MacDonald, was hit by a truck while riding his bike. His left leg was badly broken and right leg suffered serious injury as well. Safely home and recovering now, Alex is beginning the long hard journey back to normal health and will likely be able to return to full activity as a triathlete.
Most of us will not suffer the same kind of accident as Jordan and Alex, but like those two triathletes, many of us will experience a grinding halt to our current success in sport, profession or personal life at one time or another. When the dust settles, what will we do?
For Jordan, the path was clear. Despite being severely injured, he still possessed the raw material (mind, body and most importantly, spirit!) to overcome a major setback. After nearly dying, he emerged from the ashes and inspired me, as well as thousands of others, by finishing fourth in a competitive field of a physically grueling event.
Triathlon gave Jordan a venue in which to mount his comeback. Years ago, it gave me the venue to redefine myself as an athlete versus an overweight accountant with high cholesterol. Whether you have suffered a major setback in your life, or are just looking to redefine yourself, triathlon can be a venue for you, too. In fact, there are more than 100 events here in North Carolina to help you redefine yourself as a triathlete and endurance athlete!
Endurance Magazine wishes Alex a healthy Jordan Rapp style recovery and future success as he rebuilds himself after his accident and wishes you a safe and healthy journey on your path to your first and future triathlons!
Inspire. Perform. Endure.
