Course Description

The Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon and Rex Healthcare Half-Marathon event, the city’s premier distance road race, sets off on Sunday, Nov. 6. The marathon and half-marathon are USATF-sanctioned events and USATF-certified courses. The marathon is a Boston-qualifier.

The event now includes:

  • Four-person marathon relay
  • News & Observer Old Reliable 10k Run
  • YMCA Kids’ Marathon Mile

All races start at 7 a.m., except the YMCA Kids’ Marathon Mile, which starts at 7:20 a.m. (Nov. 6marks the end of daylight savings time. Don’t forget to set your clocks back.)

With a new start/finish at the N.C. State University Bell Tower, the race courses were designed to showcase many of the focal points of the city, including downtown Raleigh, the state capitol, Glenwood South, Hillsborough Street, N.C. State University, Meredith College and the Raleigh Greenway.

The courses also highlight the diversity of Raleigh’s landscape, from modern city to forest trails and open farmland. Marathon runners will be treated to a run through Umstead Park. This jewel of the Triangle, featuring hard-packed gravel trails and a lush forest landscape, has long been a favorite destination for local runners.

The marathon, half-marathon, four-person relay and 10k will run together for the first 6.2 miles, where the 10k finishes at Cameron Village. The other races continue on to the N.C. State Fairgrounds, which is the turnaround point for the half-marathon. The marathon and relay then continue on to Umstead Park, where the runners will experience 3.5 miles of wide gravel trails and rolling hills.
