There’s no reason to miss Setup Events’ new Shipwreck Triathlon at Holden Beach, N.C. (south of Wilmington, N.C., and north of Myrtle Beach, S.C.) on Nov. 5. The start time, 10 a.m., is great for those enjoying a weekend at the beach or looking to drive down on race day. And the distance, which Setup is calling a “Sprinternational,” is perfect for those not ready to try the international distance but wanting to go beyond a traditional sprint. The new distance consists of a 1,000-meter ocean swim followed by a flat and fast 30k bike and an equally flat and fast 8k run. The late start time and early fall date should provide participants with great air temperatures for racing as well as wetsuit-legal water temperatures.
Situated on an Atlantic coastal barrier island, Holden Beach faces south onto the Long Bay region of Brunswick County. Take Interstate 95 from the north or south, I-40 from the west, or US-17 South (from Wilmington) or North (from Myrtle Beach) to Holden Beach, which is approximately three hours from Raleigh and four hours from Charlotte or Greensboro.
Holden Beach has more than eight miles of clean, sandy beaches and a year-round moderate temperature. The island is a great place for those seeking a quiet, family-oriented atmosphere, not to mention its storied history of pirates and shipwrecks.
