The Get Heeled 5K supports active living, community outreach and families affected by childhood cancer. Here the competition is not among the participants but against cancer. Runners and walkers do not register for the GH5K to compete. There are no numbers on bibs and no timing chips to capture results. Instead, participants write personal messages on their bibs proclaiming why this event brought them here. There are no prizes or awards given to those who finish first because the only results that matter are the total funds raised (more than $130,000 in three years) and the number of kids and families impacted (too numerous to know).
The Get Heeled 5K focuses on Family Supportive Care within UNC Lineberger. Walking into the clinic, it’s easy to see the efforts that have come before. From the bright, cheerful waiting and treatment areas, to the dedicated playroom, to the hospital school teachers, to the computer resources that allow kids to connect with other kids experiencing cancer, this facility is not built to treat cancer, it is designed to crush it.
Many GH5K presenters and participants know the impact of Family Supportive Care through firsthand experience as a patient, family member, volunteer, staff or visitor. “As a family who has faced the trials of battling pediatric cancer, we were so thankful to be involved in an event where 100 percent of the proceeds fulfilled the needs of our local pediatric oncology department. Our family was able to spend a day full of fun and excitement with friends and supporters from our community, all while helping to raise much-needed awareness for pediatric cancer. We are extremely thankful to all who worked so hard to make the Get Heeled 5K such a success and can’t wait to get more of our family and friends involved in future years!” says Nicole Burnette, pediatric cancer family member.
Even one short trip through the clinic changes lives and helps people realize that events like the GH5K are vital to make sure this facility always has the resources it needs to make the difference it does. The GH5K doesn’t just raise funds for Supportive Care programs; it celebrates the uncommon courage of UNC’s pediatric patients.
“We have been involved with the Get Heeled 5K from the beginning, and it’s one of our favorite events each year. This event understands community and people, which is why it’s no surprise that this has become a one-of-a-kind event in our community. From the dollars raised to the party atmosphere, the Pink Pacers do it right. When you raise support for those in need, and partner that with a top-notch production, you get a nice result. You get the Get Heeled 5K!” says Brian White, owner of Fleet Feet Sports Carrboro.
