Enjoy a day of fun and fitness with the whole family at the Big Red Shoe 5K & Festival on Sept. 7. The event supports the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, thus the “Big Red Shoe.”
The day will feature road events for all ages and levels with a USATF-certified 5k run/walk and 1k fun run/walk for the kids. The day will start with the 5k run at 8 a.m. and be followed by other fun events, including a pancake breakfast from 8:30-10:30 a.m. The first plate is free to all race participants!
Post-race fitness and festival fun includes a barre-on-the-lawn class, a yoga-on-the-lawn class and a Freestyle Fitness Challenge with personal trainers. If indoor cycling is your thing, come get a customized fit on the Keiser + spin bike.
There will be pottery, art demos and art for sale, a rock-climbing wall, a water-dunk tank, a clubhouse moon bounce, a balloon artist, line dancing, a kids’ obstacle course, face painting, a petting zoo, a registered dietitian to offer free nutritional resources, free massages and raffles and prizes.
The Ronald McDonald house is a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children from across the Carolinas receiving medical treatment at hospitals in Charlotte. During short-term or extended hospital stays, the home provides a haven for families to rest, eat and find support from one another as they cope with their children’s medical needs. The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte features 28 private suites and bedrooms, as well as a family kitchen, great room, learning center, playground and sitting porch. Visiting families will also have access to The Cornwell Center throughout their stay.
The entry fee for the 5k run/walk is $25 before Aug. 31, then $30 from Sept. 1 through race day. The entry fee for the 1k fun run/walk is $5. Sign up at www.queencitytiming.com.
