5K Run to Raise Funds for Student Scholarships and Girls on the Run
The 15th annual 49er Gold Rush 5K, presented by Novant Health will take place at 9 a.m. on Feb. 6, 2016. Proceeds from the 5K help fund UNC Charlotte student development scholarships and direct donations are taken for Girls on the Run.
Previously known as the Homecoming 5K, the race has become a very popular event kicking off the month of February. According to race director Kemet Gatchell, “the event is enjoyed both by year-round runners and Couch-to-5K participants, as the timing of the event coincides well with New Year’s resolutions.”
The 2015 race attracted a record 792 participants and raised over $12,500 for UNC Charlotte student development scholarships. The event also raised over $500 for Girls on the run.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the 5K including students, faculty and staff, alumni, and the Charlotte community. UNC Charlotte students who register before the early bird deadline will receive a student discount. “Registration is now open at recservices.uncc.edu/signature/5k and we are pleased to offer online registration with no additional fees,” says Gatchell.
Participants who register by the early bird deadline (Jan. 26) are guaranteed a long-sleeved commemorative T-shirt. There are numerous age group awards as well as awards for top students, faculty/staff, alumni, and community. Runners and walkers can enjoy both pre and post race refreshments. According to long-time participant and Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Ted Elling, “It’s a challenging course because of the hills, but it’s a great way to see some of the landscape of the ever-changing UNC Charlotte campus!”
