Capes will fly in Durham on March 5th, 2016 as a large, welcoming community of runners, neighbors, friends and survivors race in memory of a sweet six-year-old girl and raise money to fight the disease she did not survive.
The Florence Forth 10K/5K is named after Florence McDow, who marched forth every day battling Autoimmune Encephalitis, often wearing her favorite pink cape.
From a high-profile athlete with a diagnosis to new brain science studies, Autoimmune Encephalitis is increasingly in the news. In fact, doctors are beginning to question how rare this disease is. To further the research, Florence’s family established a Durham based nonprofit called the Autoimmune Encephalitis Alliance (https://aealliance.org). The group connects people and resources in order to improve care, expand treatment and seek a cure. One hundred percent of Florence Forth race proceeds benefit the Alliance’s work.
Florence Forth offers both a 10K competitive road race with cash prizes and a 5K community run/walk. Both races start at 8:00am on Durham’s Ninth Street and offer a beautiful, rolling course through Durham’s historic neighborhoods.
Last year’s Florence Forth raised $60,000 for the AE Alliance. So, put your registration fees to work for a good cause and join us in Durham for the 4th annual Florence Forth road race. Capes are optional. Doing good isn’t!
