Wisdom comes with age. At least for me, that also holds true for endurance sports. It seems like yesterday that I was invincible – before overuse injuries sidetracked my training and got in the way of reaching my racing goals and preventing me from simply enjoying everything running brings to my life. Now I’m healthy, and have learned to embrace, and even enjoy, well-known injury prevention practices like strength training, foam rolling, dynamic stretching, etc.
Compression wear, another very effective tool for preventing injuries, has been on the scene for quite a few years now. Personally, I’ve used mostly compression socks. Now OS1st is taking compression to another level by offering a host of innovative products combining the benefits of medical grade orthopedic bracing support with the many benefits of compression. Their “brace layer system” uses compression to surround joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments with anatomically correct zones for enhanced circulation. The result is the prevention of common injuries and pain-free performance.
When I heard about OS1st Brace Layer System, I was eager to give their products a try, and fortunate enough to test out a pair of their Performance Foot Sleeves, which prevent plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis. I also scored a Performance Quad Sleeve, which prevents ITB syndrome and quads strains.
For about 2 months now, I’ve been running 30+ miles a week with the OS1st braces, and have noticed a significant difference. While the braces seem tight at first, once I start running I quickly forget that I’m wearing them and somehow feel more confident in my stride. The support is exactly where I need it. Post-run soreness has been significantly reduced. Back to back runs, even if they’re both intense, seem more doable and less likely to result in a setback.
Besides the products that I tested, OS1st also offers sleeves for ankles, calves, knees, patellas, elbows and even wrists. I love their products and think they could make a huge difference for any athlete of any level. Whether you’ve dealt with a prior injury or not, the wise thing, is to embrace new tools that help all of us keep moving and enjoying an active lifestyle.
