Knightdale – June 16

5 miles, Menacing Challenges, Mucking Glory

This could be your mucky day. MuckRuckus MS Carolinas is coming to the Triangle on June 16. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater Carolinas Chapter, invites you to get dirty and raise money for multiple sclerosis, a chronic, unpredictable neurological disease that affects the central nervous system, impacting more than 13,500 people in the Carolinas. MuckRuckus MS is a fun event for a good cause. It’s a team event, following an obstacle-laden challenge course through miles of water, mud, and muck. It’s tough, it’s challenging, and it’s rewarding. It’s also inclusive. It’s for the active and the outgoing; it’s not just for the top tier of amateur athletes (although all are welcome). It’s a good time. Above all, it raises funds and awareness for the people we care about.

This course doesn’t muck around. Participants at MuckRuckus MS will conquer a five-mile course laden with 20-30 obstacle course elements, varying from climbing a wall of logs, to slithering through the muck under a cargo net, to swinging across a pit. Last year runners got covered head to toe in mud (the MS Society’s event formerly known as Mud Run is now MuckRuckus) as they screamed down the giant slip ’n’ slide, ducked under floating logs, and crawled through muddy tunnels. One participant summed up the event by saying on Facebook, “I was laughing so hard … I could barely get up! If it wasn’t for my overalls Kate would have never got me out of that pit! She pulled me out by the back of my pants … like a suitcase! I’m still laughing today!”

It’s dirty work ending MS. MS affects more than 400,000 people and their families in the United States and impacts twice as many women as men. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease. The National MS Society is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do something about MS now – to move together toward a world free of multiple sclerosis. MS stops people from moving. We exist to make sure it doesn’t.
