This year’s event will be held May 9, 2020.
Located in the beautiful Alleghany Highlands of Virginia, the Agony in the Alleghanies Gran Fondo crosses some of the most scenic terrain on the east coast. The Alleghany Highlands is over 50% National Forest Lands so you will see everything from beautiful mountain views & scenic cascading waterfalls to national historic landmarks along your ride. We are Virginia’s first and finest Fondo!
The event offers four races for most skill levels as well as a King & Queen of the Mountain race! The Gran Fondo stretches 103 miles and includes nearly 10,000 feet of climbing! You will encounter two large mountain climbs with beautiful views, a view of Falling Springs Falls – a towering 80 ft cascading waterfall that Thomas Jefferson himself deemed “Remarkable”, and a glimpse of Humpback Bridge, the United States only humpback covered bridge. Other races include the Medio Fondo – 69 miles, Medio Mountain – 64 miles with a large mountain climb included and the Piccolo Fondo – 30 miles, for more novice riders. The King & Queen of the Mountain races are included in the Gran Fondo & Medio Mountain races and starts at the bottom of Hot Springs Mountain and time is stopped at the crest of the long and windy trek. All races are chip timed and include a state police escort and SAG wagon with first aid supplies and drinks.
The courses meander along scenic back roads that are exceptionally maintained with little to no gravel and you will find nearly 100 local volunteers along the way providing you with fluids, snacks and serving as road marshals. A welcome “Rock the Block” party is hosted the Friday evening before the race in downtown Covington coinciding with event registration & packet pick-up featuring live music, food and drinks and a post-race celebration is hosted in Clifton Forge following the conclusion of the ride! Overnight bike storage is available free of charge on-site with 24 hour security and shuttle service is available as well. All participants receive a welcome bag and finisher medal. Age group award winners receive a special prize and top 3 male and female overall in each race receive our large, stainless steel, polished trophies made by a local steel fabricator.
Whether you are incredibly skilled or just dabbling in a new hobby, the Agony in the Alleghanies Gran Fondo has something for everyone. We encourage you to visit the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia and see what makes us #UniquelyAlleghany!
