For years, I ran exclusively in New Balance shoes. I loved the wider toe box of the regularly sized shoe since I don’t have exceptionally wide feet that require a larger width shoe, but still like the comfort of a roomy toe box. Some time back, I switched brands and have been decidedly not loyal to any particular shoe. So, I was excited to get my 1063’s and see if they were as comfortable as the older models I owned previously.
As soon as I slipped my foot in the shoe, my feet remembered their “old friend”. Not only did the New Balance 1063’s have the roomy toe box I used to love, but they also fit snugly on my heel, which has always been a problem for me with more than one other major brand shoe. The 1063’s come with New Balance’s patented NLock lacing system to help keep the shoe secure. More importantly for me, they also came with their “Sure Lace” a computer knit lace with a reciprocating wave pattern that will not untie under high performance or inclement conditions. They also help adjust tightening of the shoe around the foot. All around, the 1063 was the best fitting shoe I’ve ever had. All that remained was the actually road test.
The New Balance 1063’s are perfect for a neutral runner who desires a well-cushioned shoe. During my month of testing, I ran on pavement and soft root- and rock-less trails, like the bridal path at Umstead. My distances varied from 6 to 12 miles and the terrain varied from flat to hilly, including a very steep hill on the North Turkey Loop Trail at Umstead. Without fail, the 1063’s remained snug on my foot while the new Cocona® (made from recycled coconut shells) fabric was very breathable for even a heavy sweater like me. Most importantly, the shoes provided a smooth transition from heel to foot. I can also add that I tested the shoes on quite a few 1 minute intervals with a mid-foot strike and the shoes held up well.
Overall, I am an extremely picky person when it comes to comfort. I always seem to be fidgeting with my laces, tightening and loosening, just to get a comfortable fit. I had no such problems with the 1063’s. I was extremely pleased with these shoes and for the life of me can’t remember why I switched in the first place. I can’t say I will once again be an exclusive New Balance runner from here on out, but the ball is now in the other manufacturer’s court to win me back.
