The fifth annual Allscripts Tobacco Road Marathon and the Bay Six Tobacco Road Half-Marathon presented by Inside-Out Sports will be held Sunday, March 16, 2014, in Cary, N.C. The marathon course is fast and flat, with 10 percent of its runners qualifying for the legendary Boston Marathon. It consists of 21 miles of the granite-screened American Tobacco Trail (ATT), a scenic passage through lush Carolina-pine woods. Eight miles of the half-marathon are on the ATT. The shady course combines with ideal running weather to help runners achieve their goals. The normal average temperature in North Carolina during March is 50 degrees F, comfortable conditions for distance running.
The ATT is a recreational rail-trail located on an abandoned railroad corridor of the Norfolk Southern Railroad. Both races start and finish at the USA Baseball National Training Complex with simultaneous start times of 7 a.m. The course has a downhill finish and is, once again, expected to result in fast times. Whether you are trying to qualify for Boston, set your personal best performance record or succeed in running your first full or half-marathon, this is the right course to achieve your best result.
Both race courses are USA Track and Field (USATF)-certified. These events are totally nonprofit, as all proceeds go to charity. This year the event organizers expect to contribute more than $100,000 to their four primary charities: Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy, the Wounded Warrior Project, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the American Red Cross. Over the past four years the Tobacco Road Marathon races have contributed more than $300,000 to charitable organizations.
