USA 10K Trail Championships – Continental Divide Trail Race – Aug. 23 – 9 a.m. – Laurel Springs, N.C.
The Continental Divide Trail Race will host the USA 10K Trail Championships for the sixth consecutive year in 2014. The race also serves as the NC State Trail Championship.
The course will consist of open grass fields, wide trails/fireroads, and about half will be tight single track. Most of the descents are fairly gradual but have a lot of turns, like on a trail going down a mountain. Some descents are a bit steep. The climbs are steep; the race starts on top of a mountain. You may need to hike briefly on some of the climbs but are free to run up if you like; some do. There are plenty of rocks and roots to enjoy. One section of the course has even picked up its own nickname, The Rock Climb. It is not actually a rock climb, although you may end up using your hands as you work up this part – but it is only 20 yards. So are you ready for a challenge?
The race is a great experience for all levels of runners. The elite athletes looking for top national competition should find plenty on these mountainsides. Age-group runners get the chance to challenge for national superiority in five-year age groups from 40 on up. Recreational runners get to share in the challenge on the same course, during the same race. In true trail-running fashion, all the runners will mingle afterward to share their experience on the trails. The race will also have team competitions for USATF clubs with an open category and then 10-year masters teams from 40 and up. For more information on the race and championships, please visit www.mountaingoatracing.com.
