Event Preview – Angels Race NC

8:00 AM, September 18 – Clemmons, NC

300 YDS Swim / 20K Bike / 5K Run

All of us have had someone in our life who has made a difference.  This person took the extra time to listen, to help, and to give of themselves to improve another’s life.  We often think of them as angels who entered our lives, if only for a brief time, and changed us forever.  The Angels Race is an opportunity to honor someone who has touched your life.  When you participate in the Angel’s Race, instead of writing a number on both arms, organizers write the name of your “angel” on your right arm.

“It’s become a real hallmark of the race,” says race founder Mick Gunter.  The tradition, which has carried over to other triathlons, helps tie together the competitive, physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of triathlon into a race which is unique to each participant because of their deeply personal reasons for racing.  “We’ve found that being able to recognize ‘your angel’ at the start of the race changes the whole meaning of the race for some people in a way that’s very therapeutic,” added Gunter.

The proceeds of the Angel’s Race go to support programs that encourage students, teachers, and organizations to be a positive force in the lives of children.  The primary beneficiaries are the Brittany Groover Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Karla Bolen Memorial Fund.  Both endowed funds are devoted to promoting educational opportunities in the communities that support the Angels Foundation and its activities.

The Brittany Groover Memorial Scholarship Fund provides financial support to church and community based youth oriented camps and conferences, as well as providing financial support to one or more graduating seniors from Jefferson Forest High School in Forest, Virginia.

The Karla Bolen Memorial Fund provides grants to teachers to reward excellence in teaching and enriches the existing curriculum.

Staged in Clemmons, NC this event starts out with a 300 meter swim in their outdoor pool. The bike takes you on a 2 loop course on rural roads with great pavement and transitions to a combination of pavement and hard packed dirt for a shaded out and back 5K course and a finish packed with spectators cheering with enthusiasm.  The race attracts a wide variety of participants, from local elites to first timers drawn by the spirit and friendliness of the race.
